ICBC Enhanced Care Benefits
Since May 2021, Enhanced Care provides benefits to almost everyone injured in a BC crash. We help you understand what you are entitled to and how to access it.
If you have been injured in a crash, you probably have more questions than answers right now. You may be in pain, missing work, and unsure what help is available or how to ask for it. That worry is completely normal, and you do not have to sort it out alone. British Columbia's Enhanced Care system exists to support your recovery, and understanding how it works is the first step toward getting that support.
Since May 1, 2021, ICBC Enhanced Care has provided no fault benefits to people injured in most BC crashes. These include medical and rehabilitation treatment, such as physiotherapy and counselling, income replacement if your injuries keep you from working, care and caregiver benefits if you need help at home or normally care for others, and permanent impairment benefits if your injuries have lasting effects. The benefits are there regardless of who caused the crash.
Coverage under Enhanced Care is broad. Drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians injured in a crash involving a vehicle are generally covered, and you do not need to own a car or hold your own insurance policy to qualify. This surprises many people, especially cyclists and pedestrians who assume the system is not for them. If a vehicle was involved in your injury, it is worth finding out what you are entitled to before you write anything off.
Accessing benefits starts with reporting the crash to ICBC and opening a claim, then following through with treatment and documentation. Most claims proceed smoothly. But if your benefits are cut off early, your treatment requests are denied, or the process stops making sense, that is a good time to get advice. We review files, explain entitlements in plain language, and step in when needed. It all starts with a free case evaluation.

Common questions
What benefits does ICBC Enhanced Care provide?
Enhanced Care includes medical and rehabilitation treatment, income replacement if you cannot work, care and caregiver benefits, and permanent impairment benefits for lasting injuries. These are no fault benefits, meaning they are available regardless of who caused the crash. Which ones apply to you depends on your injuries and circumstances.
Am I covered if I was a passenger?
Yes. Passengers injured in a BC crash are generally covered by Enhanced Care, whether the crash happened in the vehicle of a family member, a friend, or a stranger. You do not need your own insurance policy, and your claim is your own, separate from the driver's claim.
Am I covered as a cyclist or pedestrian?
Generally yes. If you were injured in a crash involving a vehicle in BC, Enhanced Care benefits are typically available even though you were not in a vehicle and even if you do not own one. Many cyclists and pedestrians never realize this, so it is worth confirming your entitlements.
Do I need a lawyer to access Enhanced Care benefits?
Not always. Many claims proceed smoothly without one. A lawyer becomes valuable when benefits are denied or cut off, when a permanent impairment is being assessed, or when the process stops making sense. A free case evaluation can tell you honestly whether legal help would actually add value in your situation.
Does it matter who caused the crash?
For Enhanced Care benefits, generally no. These are no fault benefits, available to injured drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians regardless of who was responsible. Fault can still matter in other ways, such as insurance consequences for a driver, but it does not bar you from treatment and support for recovery.
What should I do first after a crash in BC?
Get medical attention, report the crash to ICBC, and keep records of your injuries, treatment, and time missed from work. Follow your care providers' advice. If anything about your claim becomes confusing or your benefits are reduced, reach out for a free case evaluation before accepting anything you do not understand.

Unsure what benefits you are entitled to?
No pressure and no obligation. Just a clear conversation about where you stand and what comes next.
