Family Lawyers in Vancouver
If your relationship is ending or a family dispute is hanging over you, life in Vancouver does not slow down to let you sort it out. There is still rent or a mortgage to cover, a commute to make, and kids who need their routines. On top of that, you are trying to make decisions about your children, your home and your money while you are exhausted and unsure what the law actually says. That is a hard place to be, and you do not have to work through it on your own.
British Columbia family law runs on the Family Law Act, and when children are involved every decision turns on their best interests rather than who is to blame for the breakup. We walk you through how that framework applies to your separation or divorce, your parenting arrangements and child support, any spousal support, and the way property and debt get divided between you. Vancouver families also tend to carry their own wrinkles, from a high value home or strata unit to a pension, a business, or assets and family on both sides of the border, and we take the time to map those out with you.
Where it makes sense, we work toward an agreement through negotiation or mediation so you can keep costs down, lower the conflict and protect your relationships, above all with your children. When a fair resolution is not possible, we are ready to advocate for you through the BC courts. Either way, you will know where you stand and what your choices are before you commit to anything, starting with a free first case evaluation.
How we help in Vancouver
Separation and divorce
We guide you through separating or divorcing in BC, sort out the legal date of separation, and make sure each step is handled properly and on time.
Parenting arrangements
We help you set parenting time and parental responsibilities that put your children first and reflect their best interests under the Family Law Act.
Child and spousal support
We work out child support under the Federal Child Support Guidelines and spousal support that fits your situation, whether you pay or receive it.
Dividing property and debt
We help you divide the family home, savings, pensions, a business and shared debt, including the higher value real estate many Vancouver couples own.
Agreements
We prepare cohabitation, marriage and separation agreements that are clear, fair and built to hold up if they are ever questioned later.
Mediation and negotiation
We aim to resolve matters out of court wherever we can, which usually means less conflict, less stress and lower cost for your family.
Common questions
Do we have to go to court to separate in Vancouver?
Often, no. Many Vancouver families reach a fair outcome through negotiation or mediation, which is usually faster, calmer and less expensive than a courtroom fight, and it lets you keep more control over the result. If court does become necessary to protect you or your children, the matter would generally proceed through the BC Supreme Court or Provincial Court, and we are fully prepared to take that step and advocate for you.
How is parenting time decided under BC law?
Under the Family Law Act, every decision about children is guided by their best interests, not by who is at fault for the separation. The court looks at things like each child's needs, their relationship with each parent, and the day to day arrangements that already work for your family. We help you build a parenting plan that supports your kids, and we work to keep conflict to a minimum throughout.
We own a condo in Vancouver. How is the home divided?
As a general rule, property built up during the relationship is shared between spouses, with some exceptions, and that includes the family home whether it is a house or a strata condo. Given Vancouver property values, the home is often the largest asset in the picture, so getting the numbers right matters. We review your finances and the title with you and work toward a division that is clear and fair to both sides.
